Frequently asked questions

Is Atreemology free?

Yes. The full Foundational Grove (26 hand-verified root families and every word that grows from them) is free, with no account, subscription, or ads, and it will stay free. Larger root packs are on the roadmap and will be optional one-time purchases that never replace the free grove.

Can I support the project?

If it's been useful, you can leave a one-off tip or make a one-time "Supporter" purchase that unlocks a cosmetic Golden Grove theme in the app. Both are entirely optional and change nothing about the free tier. See the support page for details.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can open Atreemology and start planting roots immediately, and your progress is saved automatically on your own device. An account is optional: create a free one from the Profile screen if you want a cloud backup, or if you buy a root pack so it unlocks on all your devices.

Does my progress sync across devices?

Yes, if you sign in. Without an account your forest is saved only in your browser on that device, so clearing browser data removes it. Sign in from the Profile screen with your email (we send a 6-digit code, no password) and your progress is backed up and merged across every device you sign in on. You can still use "Export my progress" for a backup file, and delete your account and cloud copy at any time.

Does it work offline?

Once a page has loaded in your browser, most of the app works without a connection, since everything runs locally and progress is saved to your device first. If you are signed in, changes sync to your cloud backup the next time you're online. Root packs you've unlocked are kept on your device after the first download.

How is this different from a flashcard app?

Flashcard apps usually hand you disconnected words to memorize one at a time. Atreemology teaches the root those words grow from first, so learning one root, like "dict" (to speak), unlocks a whole family of words (predict, dictate, verdict) at once, instead of treating each one as a separate fact to memorize.

What's spaced repetition, and do I have to manage it myself?

No, it happens automatically. After you learn a word, you rate how well you knew it (again, hard, good, or easy), and Atreemology schedules it to come back for review right before you'd naturally start forgetting it, rather than at a fixed interval.

Is there an Android or iOS app?

Atreemology works as a web app in any modern mobile or desktop browser, and can be added to your phone's home screen like a native app. A Google Play listing is in progress; there's currently no plan for an Apple App Store release.

Who verifies the word roots?

Every root and word family that's live in the app has been individually checked against its actual etymology, not auto-generated or bulk-imported. Roots that haven't been verified yet are shown on the roadmap as locked, not shipped as plantable content.

Can I get my data or delete it?

Your progress lives only in your browser's local storage, so you're always in control of it: export it from the Profile screen at any time, or clear it by using "Reset all progress" on the same screen (or clearing your browser's site data). See the privacy policy for details.
